No. NIOS is an open schooling system designed for self-study and flexible learning, though students must attend practical sessions and exams at their study centres.

NIOS offers multiple mediums of instruction depending on the course level:
Secondary Course (Class X): English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Odia, Telugu, Gujarati, Tamil, and Malayalam.
Senior Secondary Course (Class XII): English, Hindi, Odia, Bengali, Gujarati, and Urdu.

Yes, practical exams are conducted at the assigned Accredited Institution (AI) or Study Centre.

● Exams and flexibility

Final exams are held in March–April at designated NIOS exam centres in the student’s city or region.

Twice a year in April–May and October–November, plus multiple On-Demand Examination (ODE) cycles for added flexibility.

NIOS exams are conducted in offline mode.

NIOS exams are 3-hour, pen-and-paper tests.

NIOS offers On-Demand Examinations at Secondary and Senior Secondary levels, giving flexible attempts in specific subjects and opportunities to improve performance.

Under the On-Demand Examination (ODE) scheme, a student can apply for a maximum of four subjects at a time, depending on the course/stream and eligibility criteria prescribed by NIOS.

Under the Transfer of Credit (TOC) provision, a student who has previously passed certain subjects from a recognised board but has not qualified for the overall board certification may transfer marks for a maximum of two subjects, subject to NIOS guidelines. The transferred subjects must be from the approved subject list and meet the eligibility criteria prescribed by NIOS.
